News and Events

November 2008

It's here! Our completely redesigned diocesan website--at the same address, www.diosef.org (or www.episcopalsouthflorida.org)--will be online in time for Diocesan Convention, Nov. 7-8. (Clergy spouses who plan to attend the Clergy Spouses' Breakfast on Nov. 8 need to register online, even if they are not planning to attend other parts of the convention.)

  • Sewing machines for New Orleans - Many women in New Orleans lost their sewing machines to Hurricane Katrina, and have not been able to replace them, because social service agencies don't consider a sewing machine an "essential" household item. However, sewing machines are essential for many poorer households there, because the women not only make clothes for their own families, but also supplement their income by making clothing and Mardi Gras costumes, and doing tailoring, for other people. If you have or know of a sewing machine that could go to a household in New Orleans, contact Ann Ball, aball@edola.org or 504-259-3125. She's a case manager with the Diocese of Louisiana Office of Disaster Response, and you can ship sewing machines to her at: St. Paul's Homecoming Center, 6268 Vicksburg St., New Orleans, LA 70124
  • Health ministries - Dr. Susan Chase, professor and assistant dean for graduate studies at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University and a parishioner at St. Paul's, Delray Beach, has recently been appointed Province IV representative to National Episcopal Health Ministries (NEHM). She wants to organize communication among those engaged in health ministry in our diocese, and is especially interested in hearing from congregations with active parish nursing ministries. Contact her at schase@fau.edu. For more information on NEHM go to http://www.episcopalhealthministries.org/.
  • NEHM-CaringBridge Partnership - NEHM has just announced a new partnership with CaringBridge, which offers free, personalized websites that support and connect loved ones during critical illness, treatment and recovery. This resource allows loved ones to post messages of support, photos and updates about the ill family member. For more information, go to http://www.caringbridge.org/episcopalhealthministries.
  • "The Christmas Shoppe" at Trinity Cathedral - From Nov. 1 through Christmas, Trinity Cathedral's Bookstore and Gift Shop will be "The Christmas Shoppe," with new merchandise for decorating and gift-giving. Extended shop hours for November and December are: Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturdays, noon-5 p.m.; and Sundays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

  • PhotoShop Elements Workshop - On Jan. 10, 2009, from 9 a.m.- noon at St. Gregory's, Boca Raton, Diocesan Communications Ministry will offer "An Introduction to PhotoShop Elements," a three-hour course taught by graphic designer/digital photographer Steve Vinik, a lay member of St. Gregory's and a frequent contributor of photos for The Net. The class will cover some of the basic tools of PhotoShop Elements, with step-by-step demonstrations of such projects as how to improve a digital photo, how to format images for different purposes (for the web, for printed materials and for office documents), how to add text and how to use the Layers function to create collages and fun images. Class members will work on their own laptop computers, loaded with their own copies of PhotoShop Elements (be sure to bring a plug-in mouse). The cost for the day is $5, including lunch following the class. To register, email Mary Cox at episcorat@aol.com; this class can accommodate no more than 20 people, so it's first-come, first-served. If there is sufficient interest, we will offer another class later next year.
  • Prison ministry - Deacon George Kinard, who is now our diocesan coordinator for prison ministry, is available-and eager-to speak to congregations and groups about what our diocese is doing (and hopes to do) in ministries to those who are incarcerated and their families, and to help ex-offenders return to a healthy, productive life in the community. You can contact George at 772-546-1027 or gojud3@bellsouth.net.

Copies of the ads in poster form are available from Episcopal Books and Resources, www.episcopalbookstore.org.
  • Welcome Posters - A designer in the Diocese of Bethlehem (Penn.) is offering Welcome Posters intended to help churches welcome newcomers. The set of seven 11" x 17" posters, which correspond to the liturgical seasons of the church year, can be customized with a parish's name. The cost is $35 for a year's set of posters, which are sent in PDF format. For more information and to see the 2008-2009 posters, go to www.episcopalposters.org. Coordinating postcards for Christmas, Easter and the beginning of the school year are also available.
  • Net mailing list - If you haven't updated your parish mailing list for The Net in the past year, please do that-out-dated addresses cost us about $2000 in "bad address" returns from the post office last year! Address updates go to US Data, data@usdps.com, or 12601 SW 130 St., Miami, FL 33186. If you have a question about format, call US Data at 305-256-0293.
  • Facebook - Are you on Facebook? Thanks to the Rev. Christina Encinosa, the diocese now has a page on the social networking site, providing us with another way to communicate with each other around the diocese. If you use Facebook, you can join us at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=16618644484. (Also look for pages for The Episcopal Church, Trinity Cathedral, Friends of Episcopal Charities, Diosef Deacons, several of our congregations, Washington National Cathedral and other Episcopal groups.)
